Day:
London
There are numerous
ways to get the most out of your 24 hours in London. Regardless of
where your interests lie -- sightseeing, pub-hopping, perusing the
different neighborhoods -- your first step should be to purchase a One-day
Travelcard. The visitor Travelcard is available for varying
periods of city travel up to a week. It offers unlimited access on
almost all public transportation systems—the major system being
the Tube or underground rail network. Also, each card is accompanied
by a coupon booklet offering discounts to most major attractions in
the city. The One-day Travelcard is available at Train and
underground stations throughout London and may be used after 09.30
Mon.-Fri. and all day Sat. & Sun (passport not required for
purchasing). Contact your local British Tourist Authority for more
information.
A good day in
London can begin with a famous double-decker bus tour. Perhaps the
most popular company is The Big Bus Company (020/ 7233-9533). Most
bus tours are excellent, just be sure to inquire if passengers can
get on and off the bus during the tour. And of course check out
prices before booking. Bus tours can be joined right off the street
corner -- you will undoubtedly notice representatives stationed
along the streets of central London. Spend your day or tour
observing the big attractions like Buckingham Palace, The Houses of
Parliament and Big Ben. Check out the National Gallery and the
National portrait Gallery at Trafalgar Square. Visiting such sites
will probably take all day.\
Before
dinner, try to fit in a London Pub Tour (020/ 8445-9191) or a
Mystery Walk Tour (020/ 7624-3978) or something similar to build
your appetite both for supper and for British culture. Again,
investigate tourist and visitor centers to discover what is
available. Ask around for an authentic British restaurant when you
are ready to dine. If you’re into the nightlife scene, head over
to Piccadilly Circus (London’s Times Square). Also, you can walk
north from here and have a cocktail and a bite to eat in bustling
Leicester Square as well. For a less-touristy night out in London
check out the nearby neighborhood of Soho, especially along Carnaby
Street. Nonetheless, pubs are abundant throughout London, find one
you like and just absorb a great part of British living. Cheers!
