The Tate Modern is relatively new among local London attractions, but is the place to visit if you're a fan of modern art. The museum opened to high acclaim on May 12, 2000 in the former Bankside Power Station. It displays the national collection of international twentieth century art - one of the three or four most important collections in the world featuring major work by influential artists. The exhibit includes the work of DalÍ, Matisse, Picasso, Rothko, Warhol and others in galleries on three levels.
The main entrance, down a ramp and inside to an enormous space that is 500 feet long and 115 feet high, is impressive as is the large sculpture within, created by French-born American sculptor, Louise Bourgeois. An information desk is off to the right with maps and brochures, and on the left there is a gift shop and cloak room. To visit the exhibits, you must take an escalator up to third and fifth floors. Art from the past hundred years is arranged by four themes: the nude, landscape, still life and history painting.
