Scruffy Soho no longer teems with 'ladies of rental virtue' and career criminals, but if interests lead toward pubs, strippers, sex shops, gay bars, leather lovelies and the rest of today's sexual bouillabaisse, it's the place for you. Aside from Soho's more libertarian entertainment qualities, the neighborhood does harbor a bit of British culture and contains some of the city's flashiest restaurants in London. Old Compton Street is the best bet for people watching. Ronnie Scott's just around the corner on Frith has jazzed England since 1959. The Bar Italia, across the street serves espresso and great pastries and has the distinction of being below the studio where British claim TV was first demonstrated. It is also next door to a house where Mozart stayed as a child performer. There's also a decent Chinatown north of Leicester Square with some of the least expensive food in London, and it's all very convenient to the theater district along Shaftesbury Avenue.
