There is no greater display of pageantry in London than the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace. It is perhaps the most famous ceremony in all of Europe, as is evident by the number of tourists who flock here early in the morning to find a good vantage point. That said, there isn't much point in attending if you aren't able to arrive early enough to get a good spot. People will tell you to stand in front of the Victoria Memorial, facing the palace but that really isn't a good place to see more than the arrival of the New Guard and the band. To see everything else that goes on, you must be standing in front of the Palace railings, close to the center entrance. Avoid temptation to climb on the Victoria Memorial statue or anything around it for a better view. You'll be asked very firmly to get down.
It's crowded, especially during peak tourist season, and it's difficult to photograph anything with everyone jostling each other for a better view. Much of the time is spent waiting for something to happen. Plan on bringing a book to read or something to sit on. It's a good idea to have someone with you to hold your place while you stretch your legs, but don't even think of trying to meet someone here. If you lose someone in your party, forget finding them, unless you've devised a place to meet away from the crowds beforehand.
Despite the inconveniences, it is exciting to watch a ceremony that has been part of British history. Another ceremony to consider watching is the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. It's held every evening at 10:00 p.m. (actually from 9:50 to 10:00 p.m.) when all the gates are locked by the Chief Yeoman Warder. As with anything revolving around British Royalty, it's done with style.
