Carnaby Street has long been the forefront for the latest in British street-style fashion, as they call it. In fact, you can argue that the ready-to-wear explosion of new designs on Carnaby Street in the 1960's changed fashion forever. The new looks that have risen from this pedestrian street, which runs north and south between Beak and Great Marlborough Streets, has influenced both the theater district and the eclectic neighborhood of Soho. Moreover, it was once the center of world boutique fashion.
Today, Carnaby still represents the latest in fashion and is currently experiencing a revolution in velvet-textured clothing. In addition, you'll find a swath of upscale shops selling classics like Pringle wood sweaters as well as a number of unique jewelry shops. Carnaby is home to everything from candle shops to homemade cosmetic stores to places that sell breakfast tea. Of course, there's also an eclectic assortment of cheap hippie garb to compliment the Italian shoe stores. Rather kinky sex shops compete for attention with the mix of cafes, Indian restaurants, gay bars and pubs in the area.
